Farnley’s lakes and lagoon are a defining part of the estate: clear water, quiet surroundings, islands, boats and fishing platforms, all set within a beautiful and carefully kept landscape. Naturally filtered, including by freshwater mussels, the lakes have a healthy ecology that supports abundant fly life, wildlife and birdlife. They bring a different feel to Farnley from the river - calmer pace, more open but just as special.

The lakes offer trout fishing in water that is lightly fished and carefully managed. They hold rainbow and brown trout, including some very large fish, and are stocked once or twice a year. The emphasis is on quality rather than quantity, with healthy fish, good fly life and water that is looked after with real care. Catch and release is encouraged, while still allowing the occasional fish to be taken for the table.

They are also one of the best places on the estate to slow down and take everything in. Swans are a familiar presence on the water and nesting on the islands, and the wider estate is home to otters, geese, kingfishers and osprey. That mix of open water, cover, birdlife and fish is a big part of what gives the lakes their atmosphere and the lake banks run wild in place to support the wildlife.

Beyond fishing, the lakes are part of the wider life of Farnley. Swimming, paddleboarding and time on the water already form part of the estate, with future plans to offer wild swimming, non-motorised water sports and a wood-fired sauna, all developed carefully and in keeping with the character of the place.
